There’s something timeless about the freedom of a road trip – windows down, music up and an open road leading south. One summer, we packed up the car in the Netherlands and set out on an unforgettable journey that stretches across countries, cultures, coastlines and straight into the heart. Here’s how it all unfolded..
Luxembourg, Paris & Andorra
🏰 Luxembourg – a gentle start
Our first stop, Luxembourg City. Perched above dramatic valleys and rivers, it felt like walking through a storybook. We explored the Casemates du Bock, strolled around the charming Old Town and enjoyed coffee in quiet squares that felt like hidden gems. A small country with a big soul.
🗼 Paris – the classic you can’t skip
From Luxembourg, we headed into Paris – because no European road trip is complete without a breath of Parisian air. We took in the Eiffel Tower’s sparkle at night and indulged in buttery croissants by morning. Even as a quick stop, Paris delivered on romance, inspiration and style. 🏔 Andorra – mountains between worlds
As we descended south, Andorra surprised us with dramatic landscapes and peaceful vibes. We drove winding mountain roads, paused for quiet walks and breathed in the pure, pine-scented air of the Pyrenees. Check out my other post about Andorra 🇦🇩
Spain – from vibrant cities to coastal bliss
Here, the road trip took on a whole new rhythm. Spain offered us a perfect blend of culture, beach towns and deep local flavor.
☀️ Barcelona – bold, vibrant & full of soul
Barcelona is a city that truly has it all: stunning architecture, golden beaches, incredible food and a vibrant energy that pulls you in. We have explored the iconic Sagrada Família, strolled along La Rambla and almost got lost in the whimsical world of Park Güell. Relaxed by the sea at Barceloneta and enjoyed local favorites – tapas, paella and crema catalana. Barcelona is more than just a destination – it’s a mood, a rhythm, a feeling that stays with you long after you’ve left. Check out my other post about Barcelona 🇪🇸
🍊 Valencia – the city of contrasts
A place where tradition and innovation coexist beautifully. Gothic cathedrals meet futuristic architecture and orange trees line the streets. We walked through Turia Park, marveled at the City of Arts and Sciences and savored our first authentic paella Valenciana by the sea.
🏖️ Alicante – sea, sunshine & Santa Bárbara
It was bright and breezy. In Alicante, everything slows down in the best way. Its castle views and seaside calm are a refreshing change of pace. This was where we started to truly unplug and feel the rhythm of Spanish coastal life.
🏛️ Cartagena – where history whispers
Catragena was a pleasant surprise – quiet yet powerful, with layers of Roman and Carthaginian history. We explored the Roman Theatre, walked its port and admired its art nouveau buildings. It’s the kind of place that inspires you with its authenticity.
🏜️ Almería – beauty by the sea
Driving into Almería felt very cinematic – dry landscapes, white villages and unspoiled nature. This city gave us a beautiful mix of desert serenity and Mediterranean freedom.
🌴 Fuengirola – coastal calm with a heartbeat
This Costa del Sol gem was all about relaxation. In Fuengirola, we enjoyed slow mornings, salty breezes, beach side strolls and some of the freshest espeto de sardinas grilled right in the sand. It was a moment to pause, recharge for a few days and feel the warmth of southern Spain.
And then… we approached something brand new.
Crossing into Morocco – the gateway to a new world
From the southern coast of Spain, we took the ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar and just like that, we entered Morocco. That first breath of North African air was different. The scent of spices, the call to prayer echoing from a minaret and the bustling colors of the medinas – Morocco was magnetic. We explored:
🎨 Tangier with its cultural blend and artistic legacy.
🕌 Fes, Meknes & Rabat for history, heart and authenticity.
Street food, mint tea, souks and desert winds – each moment was full, raw and unforgettable. Morocco opened our eyes and expanded our hearts. Check out my other post about Morocco 🇲🇦
Spain again, but deeper
After Morocco, we returned through Spain, now heading north and slightly inland:
💃 Seville – flamenco, fire & soul
Seville stole our hearts. The Alcázar shimmered in Moorish beauty, Plaza de España stunned us with its grandeur and the narrow streets of Barrio Santa Cruz whispered secrets from centuries past. We watched flamenco with wide eyes and full hearts – it was passionate and unforgettable.
🏰 Toledo – a step back in time
On the way north, we detoured to Toledo. Winding streets, medieval architecture and a hilltop view that took our breath away. This city made us feel like we’d stepped into another era, one rich in soul and beauty.
🏙️ Madrid – the pulse of the country
In Madrid, life moves fast but there’s beauty in the motion. We wandered through Retiro Park, marveled at art in the Prado and discovered small cafés where we stayed far longer than we meant to. Madrid is alive – loud, proud, passionate and we soaked up every second.
🌊 Bilbao – where art & industry dance
Driving into Bilbao felt different. The Guggenheim Museum was a beacon of creativity but the entire city buzzed with modern spirit. We admired how Bilbao reinvents itself while staying true to its Basque roots.
🌅 San Sebastián – a dreamy coastal farewell
San Sebastián was our last Spanish stop and it was pure magic. La Concha Bay, golden sand, cool surf and Michelin-starred bites – this was the good life. The food, the elegance, the sea breeze… we could’ve stayed forever.
France once more – from Biarritz, Bordeaux to Versailles
France welcomed again. This time with:
🏄♀️ Biarritz – where surf meets style
Biarritz is a chic coastal town on France’s Basque coast, known for its golden beaches, surf culture and elegant charm. Once a royal retreat, it now blends seaside luxury with laid-back vibes. A perfect mix of relaxation and sophistication. We strolled along La Grande Plage, admired the views from Rocher de la Vierge and enjoyed fresh seafood with Atlantic views.
🍷 Bordeaux – France’s wine capital
Bordeaux is a city full of charm, known for its world-famous wines, elegant architecture and relaxed riverside atmosphere. We wandered through Place de la Bourse, enjoedy the Miroir d’eau and treated ourselves to a glass of local wine in one of its cozy cafés. It’s a perfect cultural and culinary stop on the journey through France.
🏰 Versailles – a royal detour
Before driving back home to the Netherlands, we made a tour to Versailles. The wealth of the Palace of Versailles and the serenity of the gardens felt like stepping into another world. It reminded us that beauty and discipline can coexist, and the past can still impress.
Returning home to the Netherlands – full circle, full hearts
We came back with tired feet, glowing skin and more stories than we could count. But mostly, we returned with a renewed sense of how vast, rich and deeply human our world really is.
