My sister and I have a tradition: an annual sister trip where we’d escape somewhere warm, adventurous and full of life. One year, we chose Gran Canaria, starting with a stay in sunny Maspalomas. The moment we arrived, we were captivated by the sweeping sand dunes – it felt like stepping into a desert that meets the ocean. Days were slow and sun-soaked, spent lounging by the turquoise water, strolling along the lighthouse promenade and shopping at the lively Yumbo Centre. Evenings, however, were an entirely different vibe: we partied every night, hopping from cocktail bars to beach clubs and dancing to Latin beats until sunrise. Maspalomas was all about energy, sunshine and fun.
A few years later, we came back to Gran Canaria but decided to switch things up and explore Las Palmas, the bustling capital. This trip felt more cultural and vibrant. We wandered through the cobblestone streets of Vegueta, the historic old town, where colonial-era buildings and Santa Ana Cathedral stand tall. We spent time in local museums like the Casa de Colón, learning about the island’s connection to Christopher Columbus, and popped into art galleries and boutiques tucked away on charming side streets. By day, we explored vibrant markets, tasting fresh tropical fruits. By night, we discovered a whole new party scene – trendy rooftop bars, beach clubs along Las Canteras Beach and tapas spots that kept us out late sipping Canarian wine and cocktails.
What stood out most was how different these two sides of Gran Canaria felt: Maspalomas with its golden dunes, resort vibe and beach parties, and Las Palmas with its rich history, urban buzz and authentic Canarian culture. Both trips gave us something unforgettable – adventure, relaxation, nightlife and most importantly, time together as sisters making memories that still make us smile.
Gran Canaria will always be one of those places that keeps calling us back: for the sunsets, the flavors, the music and the joy of exploring it hand-in-hand with my favorite travel buddy. 🌴✨🍹
