De-clutter the Wardrobe with the “5 Whys” Method

Let’s apply one of my favourite problem-solving methods – the 5 Whys technique – to declutter the wardrobe in a more thoughtful and intentional way!

The 5 Whys technique was developed by Sakichi Toyoda, the Japanese inventor and founder of Toyota Industries, in the 1930s. It’s a simple and powerful method of root cause analysis that helps uncover the real reason behind a problem by repeatedly asking the question “Why?” typically five times. The goal is to address the underlying cause rather than just the surface-level symptoms.

How this works?

Start with a specific issue, ask “Why?” it exists and note your answer. Then ask “Why?” again based on that response. Continue this process until you reach the root cause, usually within 5 steps.

How can we apply this to the wardrobe de-cluttering?

Letting go of clothes can be surprisingly difficult, even the pieces you haven’t worn in years. That’s where this method comes in. Instead of making quick, emotional decisions, pause and ask yourself a series of honest questions. By digging deeper, you’ll gain clarity on whether an item still serves you, fits your lifestyle or reflects who you are today.

Your 5 “Why” Questions:

Do I feel amazing in it? → Why does this piece make me feel good about myself?

Is it comfortable? → Why would I choose to wear it over other pieces?

Have I worn it in the last year? → Why am I holding on to something I never wear?

Is it still relevant to my current lifestyle? → Why does this piece still fit the life I live today?

Can I style it with at least 3 outfits? → Why keep a piece that does not work with the rest of my wardrobe?

Once you reach your answer, the decision becomes easier. If the item no longer has a purpose, consider giving it away to friends or family, or donating to charity. Not only does this free up space in your wardrobe, but it also allows your clothes to benefit someone else. Letting go can feel liberating and knowing your items are helping others makes it even more meaningful 💫
